Most refrigerators generate a quiet hum when operating, especially after a sudden temperature change occurs like when the doors are opened. Though the sound can easily be drowned out by ambient noise, you should typically hear it when the unit is in use; when the cooling unit reaches its optimum temperature, it should stop.
Listen for the hum after opening the doors or on especially hot days. If the noise rarely stops, this probably means that something is preventing the unit from maintaining its optimal temperature. Your food may not spoil, but your energy bill will skyrocket due to the constant power drain. Ensure all vents are cleared of obstructions and that the doors are closing properly.
Placing thermometers inside your refrigerator can help identify areas that may not be cooled properly. Ideally, with the temperature dials on their default setting, the fridge portion will maintain a healthy 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer portion will remain at 0 degrees (or 3 and -18 degrees Celsius, respectively).
Adjust the temperature dials if needed, but if this does not help, you may need refrigerator repair service.
Mold infections can be caused by colonies hidden within the cracks and recesses of your cooling unit. Regularly wash door seals with soapy water and wipe the entire unit down, inside and out.
Water that collects in drip pans should evaporate, but may not in damp weather; empty and clean them any time liquid pools. If drip pans continue to pool at room temperature, fridge repair service may be necessary.
Condenser coils are located behind or underneath most refrigerators. If they accumulate too much debris, first unplug the unit, then use a coil brush or vacuum to remove excess filth. Plug the unit back in and test.
It may take up to 24 hours for a cooling until to regain its optimal temperature. If you continue to have problems, please call Lake Appliance Repair at 1-866-264-9578 and we’ll send one of our qualified technicians to investigate. You can also Schedule Service online using our handy web form.
