About Ione, Ca
Ione is an incorporated city in Amador County, California. The city covers an area of roughly 4.8 square miles, and is located 30 miles southeast of Sacramento, and 30 miles northeast of Stockton. The population of Ione is roughly 8,000, and it’s currently the largest city in Amador County. Steeped in antiquity, Ione is the historical home of the Sierra Miwok, an indigenous people of California. Once known as "Bed-Bug" and "Freeze Out," Ione was an important supply center on the main road to the Mother Lode and Southern Mines during the California Gold Rush. Unlike other communities in Amador County, which were founded on gold mining, Ione was a supply center, stage and rail stop, and agricultural hub. Today, eight churches, numerous Scouting and fraternal organizations, annual hometown and patriotic events, and strong soccer and little leagues attest to the close knit community spirit of Ione. The city has many interesting landmarks and historical points of interest, including the Preston School of Industry. Known as The Castle, the Preston School was built between 1890-1894 to serve as a school for juveniles referred by the courts, and today is listed as a California Historical Landmark. Ione also offers a great many things to do and places to see. Some of their most popular attractions include fine dining, golfing, touring Amador County’s famous vineyards, hunting at Camanche Hills Hunting Preserve, fishing in Lake Amador or Lake Camanche, and visiting the old-fashioned saloons and hotels. Ione is a wonderful place to live or vacation with the family.
